What do you do when something that was really super-cool ten years ago all of a sudden just doesn’t turn heads like it used to? If you were the first person to get TiVo or a plasma screen television ten years ago, you were ridiculously popular. Today, these things are in like 75% of American homes. Same thing with Razor Scooters, PS2, and that stupid Heinz ketchup that came in all different colors. That stuff was awesome in Y2K, but in Y2-10? Not so much. Nobody cares, even though all of those things could still bring you quite a bit of joy. (Well, except for the ketchup).
That’s kind of the case with Chrysler’s iconic PT Cruiser, which is one of the best Holland, MI used cars available. Ten years ago, people waited for months on lists just to get the opportunity to own one of those cars. They customized them with wood panels and decals and rims and even spoilers. Few automobiles in the last decade have been such an immediate smash hit, and for the car to have lasted ten years virtually unchanged speaks volumes about the quality of the vehicle.
But it’s not as cool as it used to be, mostly because you’ll find a Cruiser on pretty much every street corner in America. The market has been flooded, so the shock of its coolness has worn off a bit. But there are so many of them out there because people just like driving them that much. I still love my Playstation 2, for example, even though it’s entirely outdated. The kids that rode Razor Scooters around ten years ago are probably in college now, but their little brothers and sisters are still getting a kick out of them. You see where I’m going with this?
It’s no mystery why Chrysler considered shutting down production on the PT Cruiser a few years ago; sales had slowed down quite a bit and the fad seemed to be ebbing. But in terms of cost efficiency, they already had the plants making all the same parts and so on and so on. Might as well keep it running. For those looking for a good Chevy or Jeep, Holland, MI has tons of availability with those. But for some reason, people still want the PT Cruiser. It might not be as cool as it used to be, but it’s still cool in the eyes of those who drive them, and that’s all that matters.
